Meet the Team
Our leadership team has spent more than two decades at the forefront of Australia’s mutual sector – establishing organisations from the ground up, architecting governance frameworks, navigating ASIC requirements, and building institutions that genuinely serve their members.
Mutuals Matter was founded in 2023 to bring that expertise together in one place: a specialist firm purpose-built for discretionary mutuals and alternative risk solutions, with governance and compliance that sets the benchmark.
The result is a rare convergence of financial services, legal compliance and risk governance – the breadth, depth and track record this work demands.
Jodie Nicholls LLb (Hon) BEc (Hon) | Managing Director
Jodie Nicholls is one of Australia’s foremost authorities on discretionary mutuals, bringing over 25 years of specialist legal expertise across AFSL compliance, governance, regulation, strategy, and claims oversight. She was instrumental in establishing Unimutual Ltd and Capricorn Mutual Ltd – Australia’s first AFSL-authorised mutuals for miscellaneous risk products – and has since founded ACS Mutual Ltd and Employsure Mutual Ltd. Earlier experience as an insurance litigation partner, appearing in Supreme and appellate courts, sharpens her practical edge in regulatory and claims matters. Jodie holds an Honours degree in Law and Economics, an RG146 Statement of Attainment (Tier 1 – Insurance Broking) and serves as Responsible Manager across multiple Australian Financial Services Licensees.
Dr Terry Ibbotson PhD, MBA, BCom, | Chief Executive Officer
Terry Ibbotson is one of Australia’s most accomplished insurance executives, with over 50 years of leadership spanning Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Europe, and the USA. His career has been defined by driving strategic and cultural transformation across major insurers – including a global executive role at QBE Group and a directorship of the Insurance Council of Australia. Following an extensive board career across private and public companies, Terry now delivers specialist advisory services through Mutuals Matter, drawing on deep practical expertise in captive insurance and mutual structures to help organisations unlock smarter alternative risk transfer and funding solutions.
